Impact of chronic pruritus on quality of life

Chronic itching is a considerable burden for patients. On the one hand, scratching the skin poses a risk of skin damage and infection.

On the other hand, itching impairs the quality of life of those affected day and night. The consequences are far-reaching: sleep disorders with accompanying symptoms of fatigue, impairment in everyday activities, loss of performance, withdrawal from social interactions, frustration and stress.

This constant suffering is a huge burden for those affected.

As chronic itching has various causes, an individual diagnosis and adapted therapy is essential. The care of those affected usually extends over a long period of time and can also require cooperation with various specialist areas such as dermatology, internal medicine and psychosomatics. Regular clinical follow-up checks are also very important, as possible systemic diseases cannot be ruled out.

To make life with pruritus more bearable, therapeutic measures are the top priority. The use of topical baisis therapy according to the individual status of the patient and the clinical picture and short-term relief products such as creams are the first step.

Patients can also influence a number of factors: When it comes to skin care, it makes sense to prevent skin dryness. Frequent washing and/or washing with excessively warm water dries out the skin. Use mild, non-alkaline soaps or moisturizing washing syndets. After washing, it is better to dab the skin instead of rubbing it dry. Applying creams containing urea or menthol to the skin can also have a soothing effect.

Avoid skin-irritating substances; even hot spices can trigger itching. Airy, soft cotton clothing is preferable to synthetic material.

There are standardized training programs on coping techniques that can help patients break the itch-scratch cycle.
